Lamps

Wood shade table lamp on an oak chest in sunlight

Poor light makes a room feel smaller than it is. This is where I keep the lamp guides: floor lamps for a reading corner, pendants over a table, wall lamps, and the small lamp that stays on after dusk. I look for a shade that throws light down, a material I can stand to see every day, and a price I checked on the date named on the card. Daylight comes first, then one warm lamp. If I have not lived with a lamp, the card will not claim that I tested it. I link the cheapest tracked store first and mark a photo exact only when I am sure, otherwise similar to.

Wall lamps that actually light a wall

A wall lamp can decorate a surface or light it. Those are different jobs. Plenty of sconces look calm in a catalogue and throw a dull patch on the plaster at night. This post is about the ones that earn their place: w…

Swing-arm wall lamps for reading corners

A swing-arm wall lamp is the reading light that does not steal floor space. Mounted right, it puts a pool of light on the page and folds back when you are done. Mounted wrong, it blinds you or leaves the book in shado…

PH lamps without the museum price

Poul Henningsen designed the PH system for Louis Poulsen around glare control, not fashion. The layered shades hide the bulb so you see soft light, not a hot spot. Exact PH 5 and relatives sit at museum-adjacent price…

Floor lamps for dark corners

A dark corner makes the whole room feel unfinished at night. A floor lamp is often the fix: light at living height, no ceiling work, easy to move. The full decision tree is in [how to choose a floor lamp](/blog/how-to…

The sconces I keep recommending

When someone asks for a wall light that will still look calm in two years, I reach for the same few shapes. Not a catalogue dump. A short list: linen drum, metal up-down, one swing-arm idea, and the design icons peopl…

The Arco lamp problem (and what to buy instead)

The Arco floor lamp (Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, 1962) hangs a light over a table from a marble base that sits far away. It is a design icon and a spatial bully. Exact Flos pieces are expensive. Cop…

How to Layer Light So a Room Works at Night

Most living rooms run on one overhead fixture and wonder why they never feel finished after dark. Here is the layering logic, ambient, task and accent, that actually fixes it.

What Good Hotel Rooms Know About Lighting, Storage and Sleep

A well-planned hotel room has one night to make its logic clear. The best lessons for home are found in the arrival path, bedside controls and disciplined absence of clutter.

Statement lighting over the dining table: height, spacing and fixtures

The light above the table sets the mood of the whole room before anyone sits down. Here is how high to hang it, how many pendants a long table wants, and which move suits your table.
