The sconces I keep recommending

When someone asks for a wall light that will still look calm in two years, I reach for the same few shapes. Not a catalogue dump. A short list: linen drum, metal up-down, one swing-arm idea, and the design icons people mean when they say "something like the AJ."

Linen drum on a quiet stem

A linen drum softens the bulb and forgives an imperfect wall.

It is the safest "first sconce" for bedrooms and living rooms that already have timber and wool in the mix. Keep the stem short so the shade sits close to the wall.

Metal up-and-down, black or brushed brass

Metal up-down sconces give the wall a clear wash without a large shade.

Black reads graphic; brushed brass reads warmer against oak. Check glare from the sofa: you should see glow on plaster, not the filament.

The Bellevue / swing-arm family (named carefully)

Swing-arms belong beside a bed or reading chair, not as hallway decoration.

A small opal globe is the bathroom and narrow-hallway answer when a fabric shade feels wrong.

IP rating matters near water. In a dry hallway the same shape just looks calm. Avoid oversized globes that stick into the walk path.
