Design icons I keep coming back to
Chairs, tables, lamps and storage that still earn their place. Exact when I can, similar to when I must.
I have not tested every piece myself unless I say so. Prices move. The retailer's price when you order is the one that counts. How I work
These are the pieces I still point people to when a room needs one serious object.
I built this hub for the days you know the silhouette you want but not the shop link. Each tile names the designer, says why the piece still matters, and marks the photo exact or similar to. Product paths stay as [[product:slug]] until the product pages exist. Only LoomLan and Seven Paper Prints are active tracked creatives today. Other shops stay as text until their programmes clear.
For deeper designer notes, start with the designers roster.
Eames Lounge + Ottoman
This is still the lounge chair people mean when they say lounge chair.
Charles and Ray Eames designed it in 1956 for Herman Miller. Plywood shells, leather, a separate ottoman. I treat stock photos as similar to unless the maker stamp is visible. Buy the authorised version when you can afford it. A cheap copy often fails at the tilt and the leather grain.
- 1 Lounge chair + ottoman · similar to Eames Lounge · [[product:eames-lounge-ottoman]]
- 2 Side table · similar to · [[product:walnut-side-table]]
- Eames
- A note on exact, replica, or skip is coming
Noguchi coffee table
One glass top and two interlocking wood legs still define a whole living room.
Isamu Noguchi's table for Herman Miller (1948) is the shape everyone copies. I only mark a photo exact when it is the authorised piece. Triangular glass and biomorphic bases without a maker path stay similar to.
- 1 Coffee table · similar to Noguchi · [[product:noguchi-coffee-table]]
- 2 Sofa edge · similar to · [[product:linen-sofa]]
Wishbone chair (CH24)
The Y-back is the dining chair I recommend most often for a calm oak table.
Hans J. Wegner designed the CH24 for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949. Paper cord seat, steam-bent back. Replicas are everywhere. The cord and the arm curve are where cheap ones show.
- 1 Dining chair · similar to Wishbone CH24 · [[product:wishbone-chair]]
- 2 Dining table · similar to · [[product:oak-dining-table]]
- Wegner
- A note on Wishbone chairs at the table is coming
Series 7
A thin plywood shell on tubular legs still clears more floor than most dining chairs.
Arne Jacobsen designed it for Fritz Hansen (1955). Stackable, quiet, endlessly copied. I use similar to on almost every stock photo. The authorised ant-family curve is easy to fake in pictures.
- 1 Dining chair · similar to Series 7 · [[product:series-7-chair]]
- 2 Table · similar to · [[product:round-dining-table]]
- Jacobsen
- A note on Series 7 and the quiet dining chair is coming
Egg / Swan
Jacobsen's lounge silhouettes still read as one object from across the room.
The Egg (1958) and Swan (1958) for Fritz Hansen are hotel and lobby classics for a reason: the wrap of the shell holds a conversation without a high back wall. Stock photos almost never show an authorised stamp, so captions stay similar to.
- 1 Lounge chair · similar to Egg Chair · [[product:egg-chair]]
- 2 Side table · similar to · [[product:marble-side-table]]
Panton Chair
One continuous S of plastic still looks newer than half the chairs designed last year.
Verner Panton's cantilever for Vitra (first produced 1967) is the piece people mean by the plastic chair. Colour is the whole point. I mark room shots similar to unless Vitra is confirmed.
- 1 Chair · similar to Panton Chair · [[product:panton-chair]]
- 2 Floor · bare oak or concrete · mood only
Arco floor lamp
The marble-base arc is the floor lamp everyone wants and almost nobody needs exact.
Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed Arco for Flos (1962). The real base is heavy Carrara. Many stock rooms show lookalikes. I link similar to for those, and only use exact with a clear Flos path. If the budget stops you, buy a solid arc with a stone-weight base rather than a hollow fake.
- 1 Floor lamp · similar to Arco · [[product:arco-floor-lamp]]
- 2 Sofa · similar to · [[product:linen-sofa]]
- A note on the Arco lamp, and what to buy instead, is coming
PH lamp family
Layered shades that hide the bulb are still the best dining-table light I know.
Poul Henningsen's PH system for Louis Poulsen is built around glare control, not fashion. PH 5 is the one I name most. Stock pendants with multi-tier white shades get similar to unless the model is clear.
- 1 Pendant · similar to PH 5 · [[product:ph-5-pendant]]
- 2 Dining chairs · similar to · [[product:wishbone-chair]]
AJ table / wall lamp
A small directional shade that does one job well: reading light without spill.
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ for the SAS Royal Hotel. Table and wall versions share the same logic. I keep captions similar to on stock until the Louis Poulsen model is certain.
- 1 Table or wall lamp · similar to AJ · [[product:aj-table-lamp]]
- 2 Desk or bedside surface · oak or walnut · mood
Flowerpot pendant
Two hemispheres and a soft glow still beat a bare bulb over a small table.
Verner Panton's Flowerpot, including today's &Tradition editions, is the friendly cousin of harder icons. Many stock dome pendants are only similar to. Name the product path you mean.
- 1 Pendant · similar to Flowerpot · [[product:flowerpot-pendant]]
- 2 Table · similar to · [[product:round-dining-table]]
Barcelona chair
Tufted leather and an X-frame look expensive even when the copy is not.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, 1929. Knoll holds the authorised line. I almost never mark a stock photo exact. Use similar to, and say so, so a lookalike is never presented as the real chair.
- 1 Lounge chair · similar to Barcelona · [[product:barcelona-chair]]
- 2 Ottoman · similar to · [[product:barcelona-ottoman]]
LC4 chaise
A long recline on a chrome cradle still reads as rest, not as a sofa leftover.
Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand's LC4 (Cassina) is the chaise people sketch from memory. Stock chaise shots without a maker path stay similar to.
- 1 Chaise · similar to LC4 · [[product:lc4-chaise]]
- 2 Rug · similar to · [[product:wool-rug]]
String shelving
Wire sides and thin shelves still beat a heavy bookcase in a small flat.
Nisse Strinning's String system (1949) is the modular wall shelf Europe never stopped copying. Metal side panels plus wood shelves. Caption similar to unless String Furniture is confirmed.
- 1 Wall shelf · similar to String · [[product:string-shelving]]
- 2 Objects on shelf · books and ceramics · mood only
Bellevue swing-arm
A swing-arm on the wall frees the bedside table and still aims the light.
Arne Jacobsen's Bellevue family and later swing-arms share the idea: pivot, shade, wall plate. Most stock bedrooms show anonymous brass arms. Keep similar to and link the product you actually mean.
- 1 Wall lamp · similar to Bellevue / swing-arm · [[product:swing-arm-wall-lamp]]
- 2 Bed linen · oat or linen · mood
- Wall lamps
- A note on sconces I keep recommending is coming
Bouclé lounge
A current texture that still earns a tile because rooms ask for it.
I will not invent a fake mid-century name for a new bouclé chair. Call it what it is: a contemporary lounge with a nubby wool-look textile. Caption exact only for the SKU you link. Otherwise similar to a named affordable modern chair.
- 1 Lounge chair · similar to bouclé lounge · [[product:boucle-lounge-chair]]
- 2 Side table · similar to · [[product:stone-side-table]]
Fluted sideboard
Vertical flutes on oak hide storage and still read as furniture, not as a black AV box.
This is a contemporary classic, not a 1950s museum piece. I include it because a sideboard should hide the television and the clutter and still look like furniture. Always similar to unless a specific product row exists.
- 1 Sideboard · similar to fluted oak sideboard · [[product:fluted-sideboard]]
- 2 Table lamp above · similar to · [[product:wood-shade-table-lamp]]
- Sideboards
- A note on sideboards that hide the mess is coming
How I use exact vs similar to
If I cannot prove the maker from the photo, the caption says similar to.
Exact means the authorised product path. Similar to means the silhouette or material language, linked to the closest honest product I recommend. I would rather under-claim than put a brand name on a stock frame.
