Poul Henningsen designed the PH system for Louis Poulsen around glare control, not fashion. The layered shades hide the bulb so you see soft light, not a hot spot. Exact PH 5 and relatives sit at museum-adjacent prices. Copies flood every marketplace. This post is how I decide: pay for exact, buy a clear similar-to, or pick a different pendant typology.

Affiliate links: This page contains affiliate links. If you buy through one, the retailer pays me a commission. It costs you nothing extra. That commission does not decide which products I choose or what I write about them. I have not tested the products myself unless I clearly say so. Prices and availability can change; the retailer's price at the time you order applies. [How I work](https://vestados.com/affiliate-disclosure)

What the PH idea actually does

Envato Elements

• PH-style multi-shade pendant · similar to · [[product:ph-style-pendant]] • Exact PH 5 if verified · exact · [[product:louis-poulsen-ph-5]] • Table below · similar to · [[product:oak-dining-table]]

The layered shades are the point: light without looking into the lamp.

That is why a PH can hang lower over a table than a bare-bulb pendant. If a lookalike shows the bulb from the side, it is missing the job even when the silhouette looks right in a product shot.

Exact Louis Poulsen versus lookalikes

Envato Elements

• Exact Louis Poulsen PH 5 · exact · [[product:louis-poulsen-ph-5]] • Similar multi-tier pendant · similar to · [[product:ph-style-pendant]] • Optional art · exact Seven Paper where used · /recommends/spp-neutral-soft?src=ph-lamps

Caption exact only for verified Louis Poulsen; everything else is similar to.

Never call a marketplace lamp "PH 5" alone in a caption. Product cards: view offer at the cheapest tracked store when a programme is live; until then use text/price on the product page.

Size and hang height over dining

Envato Elements

• Dining pendant · similar to · [[product:ph-style-pendant]] or exact · [[product:louis-poulsen-ph-5]] • Chairs · similar to · [[product:dining-chair]] • Table · similar to · [[product:oak-dining-table]]

Match shade diameter to the table, not to the whole ceiling.

A 50 cm class pendant suits many four-to-six seat tables; oversized shades bully a small top. Hang so seated eyes do not meet the bulb edge. Full hanging take: statement lighting over the dining table.

When a similar-to is enough

Envato Elements

• Similar multi-tier or soft dome · similar to · [[product:ph-style-pendant]] • Compact dining setup · mood • Dimmer on the circuit · mood

A good similar-to with a real diffuser beats a fake icon label and a glare bomb.

Check return policy, LED or bulb type, and whether the lowest shade actually shields the lamp from dining-chair eye height. If the only reason is the logo story, skip it and spend on a chair you sit in daily.

Other quiet pendants when PH is wrong

Envato Elements

• Opal or linen dining pendant · similar to · [[product:dining-pendant]] • Table · similar to · [[product:rect-oak-dining-table]] • Optional floor glow · similar to · [[product:slim-floor-lamp]]

Sometimes the room needs a soft dome or linen drum, not a tiered classic.

Layer ambient and task light so one pendant is not doing every job: how to layer light so a room works at night.

When exact PH still makes sense

Envato Elements

• Exact PH 5 · exact · [[product:louis-poulsen-ph-5]] • Quiet table and chairs · similar to · [[product:oak-dining-table]], [[product:series-7-chair]] • Minimal competing ceiling clutter · mood

Exact PH earns its keep when glare control and longevity matter more than the invoice shock.

Then it is a lighting tool and a design history piece, not Instagram furniture. If the ceiling height or table size is wrong, museum pricing will not fix the room.

More from me in the Vestados newsletter when signups reopen. Icons deserve honesty: exact, similar to, or a different typology that fits the room you have.
