Open-plan rooms fail rugs in one of two ways: a postage stamp floating in the middle, or three different rugs fighting for attention. Size is the first decision. Fibre and pattern come after. The general checklist is in how to choose a rug; this post is the open-plan version.
Affiliate links: This page contains affiliate links. If you buy through one, the retailer pays me a commission. It costs you nothing extra. That commission does not decide which products I choose or what I write about them. I have not tested the products myself unless I clearly say so. Float the seating as one group

• Large living rug · similar to · [[product:large-neutral-rug]] or [[product:wool-rug]] • Sofa · similar to · [[product:straight-sofa-3-seat]] • Coffee table · similar to · [[product:oak-coffee-table]]
At least the front legs of every seat belong on the same rug.
In open plan, the rug is the wall you do not have. Size up until the conversation circle reads as one island. A slightly generous rug looks calm; a small one makes the furniture look temporary.
Leave a border of floor

• Oversized wool or flatweave · similar to · [[product:wool-flatweave-rug]] • Clear floor border · mood • Side table just on or just off · similar to · [[product:side-table]]
Show a calm border of floor so the rug does not look wall-to-wall carpet.
Even 30 to 45 cm of floor around the rug helps the open plan breathe. If the only size that works is wall-to-wall, reconsider fibre and colour so it still feels like a rug, not office carpet.
Living and dining: one rug or two

• Living rug · similar to · [[product:living-room-rug]] • Dining rug under table · similar to · [[product:dining-rug]] • Optional continuous large base · similar to · [[product:jute-area-rug]]
Two rugs work when each is sized to its job; one huge base works when the plan is truly one room.
Under dining, leave roughly 60 to 75 cm beyond the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Do not let a tiny dining mat float under a six-seat table. Full dining clearance notes also sit in the main rug guide.
Layering without visual noise

• Base: jute or sisal · similar to · [[product:jute-area-rug]] • Top: smaller wool · similar to · [[product:small-wool-rug]] • Sofa · similar to · [[product:linen-sofa]] or [[product:straight-sofa-3-seat]]
A quiet large base plus a softer island on top beats two loud patterns side by side.
Keep the base neutral. The top rug can carry a bit more texture or a low-contrast pattern. Texture layering beyond rugs: how to layer textures in a living room.
Runners and soft transitions

• Hall or kitchen-edge runner · similar to · [[product:hallway-runner-rug]] • Main living rug · similar to · [[product:living-room-rug]] • Shared colour family · mood
A runner can bridge zones without pretending to be a second living rug.
Keep colour and fibre related so the floor story stays one narrative. Full hallway take: runner rugs that pull a hallway together once live.
What I measure before I order

• Tape outline of rug · mood • Sofa and chairs in place · similar to · [[product:straight-sofa-3-seat]] • Art on far wall · exact Seven Paper where used · /recommends/spp-neutral-soft?src=rug-sizes-open
Tape the rug on the floor for a day; photos lie about scale.
Note door swings, kitchen thresholds, and vacuum paths. Product cards: view offer at the cheapest tracked store when live; until then text/price on the product page. Fibre and pattern rules stay in how to choose a rug.
