Showroom sofas pose. Real ones take weekend guests, laptop evenings, and a dog that claims one corner. Shape matters more than the fabric story on the hangtag: how deep the seat is, whether the arms eat the room, and whether you can walk past without turning sideways.
Affiliate links: This page contains affiliate links. If you buy through one, the retailer pays me a commission. It costs you nothing extra. That commission does not decide which products I choose or what I write about them. I have not tested the products myself unless I clearly say so. Prices and availability can change; the retailer's price at the time you order applies. [How I work](https://vestados.com/affiliate-disclosure)
The straight three-seater that still leaves a path

• Sofa: straight 3-seat on legs · similar to · [[product:straight-sofa-3-seat]] • Rug under front legs · similar to · [[product:wool-rug]] • Floor lamp at arm · similar to · [[product:floor-lamp-corner]]
A straight sofa with visible legs keeps a small living room breathing.
Skirted blocks eat visual floor. Legs let the rug and light continue under the seat. Keep overall depth honest: many "lounge" sofas are deeper than a European room wants. More on depth in deep sofas vs upright ones.
L-shape when the room has one clear corner

• Sofa: L-shape / corner · similar to · [[product:l-shape-sofa]] • Coffee table centred on the long run · similar to · [[product:coffee-table-oak]] • Side table at chaise end · similar to · [[product:side-table]]
An L-shape works when the corner is real architecture, not leftover space behind a door swing.
Measure the chaise so it does not block the TV sightline or the route to the kitchen. If the room is narrow, a loveseat plus chairs often beats a forced L. See loveseats for small living rooms.
Soft curve, not a statement sculpture

• Sofa: soft curved arms · similar to · [[product:curved-arm-sofa]] • Cushions in linen/wool · mood / similar • Art above · exact or similar Seven Paper · /recommends/spp-neutral-soft?src=sofa-shapes
A soft curve is enough; full kidney shapes need a room that can take the drama.
Rounded arms are kinder in family rooms. Save the sculptural sofa for a space where it is the only loud object. Pair with quiet lighting from wall lamps that actually light a wall.
Low modern vs upright conversation

• Low modern sofa · similar to · [[product:low-modern-sofa]] • Upright lounge chair · similar to · [[product:upright-lounge-chair]]
Match seat height across the conversation circle or one seat will always feel wrong.
Low Italian-modern silhouettes look sharp and tire some backs. Upright European three-seaters suit longer talks and older guests. Pick for how you sit, then style.
Modular blocks when the plan might change

• Modular sofa sections · similar to · [[product:modular-sofa]] • Ottoman used as chaise or table · similar to · same system
Modular is a plan tool, not automatically a better sofa.
Buy it when you move often or share the room differently across seasons. Skip it when you want one solid silhouette and fewer seams. Full take: the modular sofa question.
Fabric and legs that survive real life

• Sofa fabric: performance linen-look or boucle · similar to · [[product:performance-sofa]] • Leg finish: oak or black metal · part of same
Performance weaves and replaceable legs beat perfect showroom wool you cannot live on.
Boucle photographs well and grabs every snack. Tight weaves and removable covers earn their keep. Name the designer only when the piece is exact (for example a verified icon sofa); otherwise caption similar to the archetype.
